No. 5 Xavier defeated Butler 86-79 at home Tuesday night. Butler coming off their big win against then No. 1 Villanova didn’t have the shooting touch they did against the Wildcats as they only went 7-27 from behind the arc. With the win Xavier has now made it 10 wins in a row after their only loss of the season coming against Arizona State.
J.P. Macura had 15 of his 20 points for the Musketeers in the first half. Also getting help from Trevon Bluiett who had a team high 21 points. After Butler jumped out to a 2-0 lead a Trevon Bluiett 3 gave Xavier the lead and they never looked back. Up by as many as 9 in the first half Butler cut the lead to 3 with 1:27 remaining before Trevon Bluiett hit a 3 and a dunk before the half ended giving Xavier a 44-36 lead.
In the second half Xavier lead by as many as 14 but Butler didn’t go away easily as a Kamar Baldwin 3 with 1:09 remaining cut the lead to 5. Xavier went on to hit their free throws and close the game out ultimately defeating the Bulldogs.
The free throw shooting numbers were lopsided as Xavier shot 37 free throws while Butler only shot 8 free throws. The rebounding margin was pretty even as Xavier only out rebounded Butler by 5.
For Butler Kelan Martin had 25 points and Kamar Baldwin had a game high 28 points in 37 minutes of playing time.
Next up Xavier 15-1 (3-0) travels to Providence 10-5 (1-1) on Saturday. Butler 12-4 (2-1) will host No. 21 Seton Hall 13-2 (2-0) on Saturday.
