With smothering defense, No. 2 University of Virginia brought No. 4 Duke University out of their comfort zone for a 65-63 win in Durham, North Carolina. The nation’s stingiest defense held the top offense in Division I with no little to no problems at all.
Blue Devils’ freshman Marvin Bagley III hit a 3-point shot making it 61-63, pulling Duke within shots lead to secure a tie with seven seconds remaining. But Kyle Guy of the Cavaliers had other plans for the Devils by knocking down a pair of free throws to secure the confident win.
Bagley III had 30 points and 14 rebounds, while Wendell Carter Jr. had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Blue Devils (18-3, 6-3). Jerome’s 3 with the shot clock ticking down put Virginia up 63-58. Players on both sides made things tense by missing shots in the final minutes.
The Cavaliers justified their No. 2 ranking and status more than ever as they become the ACC’s “team to beat”. Duke University relied too easily on their starters using zero substitutes in the second half of the match up. Bagely was the only Blue Devil to hit a field goal in the final 8 minutes of the game.
The University of Virginia will host The University of Louisville on Wednesday night, and Duke will look for a turnaround against visiting Notre Dame to start the week off on Monday.
