No. 2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke University Blue Devils gave No. 4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Iona College Gales a game they will never forget by crushing the competition 89-67 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
While coming out on top overall, Blue Devils’ Marvin Bagley III added 22 points, and 7 rebounds along side of Trevon Duval who shot 19 points with 1 rebound. Gales’ 21 point player Roland Griffin wasn’t too far behind, but the 40 point starters and bench behind him couldn’t make a lasting impression.
Duke was on top with a 14 point lead and they made sure to put distance between themselves and Iona. The ceiling is the national championship, but relying so heavily on freshman could make for an early exit in this next round.
The Gales were in their fifth NCAA Tournament in the past seven season, but after this loss, it’s now eight. They have not won a tournament game since 1980 and they won’t be doing it this season either.
With Iona College out of everyone’s brackets, Duke University will play No. 7 Rhode Island Rams Saturday, March 17th at 2PM.
The road to the NCAA Championship title continues to roll as we are about to enter the Round of 32.
