Inconsistency by the Buckeyes and dominance by the Bulldogs were the pillars of Ohio State’s 90-84 loss to Gonzaga.
While both teams were evidently nervous in the beginning, the nerves didn’t seem to faze Gonzaga as they went on a 15-0 run, thanks in part to the Buckeyes two missed layups and two turnovers. Ohio State was struggling both defensively and offensively as the Bulldogs continued to climb. Gonzaga remained in control for the first half of the game, their offense fairing too much for OSU.
However, in the second half, the Buckeyes started to fight and came back to make for an exciting second half. They took a lead with less than 10 minutes remaining, but the Bulldogs quickly reclaimed their lead to finish the game and eliminate Ohio State from reaching the Sweet 16. Zach Narvell of Gonzaga and Keita Bates-Diop led all players with 28 points each. Rui Hachimura for the Bulldogs was not far behind with 25 points.
Ohio State came up short of its first Sweet 16, while Gonzaga could be on its way to another Final Four run. Although the Buckeyes lost, it can hardly be considered a failure of a season. Unfortunately, it will be Gonzaga who will be making the sweet trip on Thursday the 22nd to play the winner of Xavier-Florida State.
