Upset Alert: Anteaters Advance

The UC Irvine Anteaters were predicted to be unable to handle the Kansas State Wildcats defense, but to the surprise of many, the Anteaters were able to scrape a 70-64 win by the fourth-ranked Wildcats.

Irvine started senior Jonathan Galloway, junior Tommy Rutherford, senior Robert Cartwright, junior Max Hazzard, and junior Evan Leonard. The team was led by Leonard, who scored 19 points, and 6 rebounds.

Kansas State started junior Makol Mawien, junior Xavier Sneed, senior Barry Brown Jr., senior Kamau Stokes, and sophomore Cartier Diarra. Stokes and Mawien led the way for the Wildcats with 18 points, and 12 rebounds, respectively.

For most of the game, the competition and score was close, evident by the tied first half score (30-30). It wasn’t till there was about 5 minutes left, that it looked like Kansas State had gained control of the game. With 1:29 left, the Anteaters looked to be the winners.

This is a notable upset to many brackets, as the Anteaters are the lowest-seeded (13) to advance in the main bracket of the 2019 NCAA Tournament so far. UC Irvine is now on their way to the Round of 32.
